KUALA LUMPUR: American entertainment media brand Billboard named award-winning singer, producer and actress Selena Gomez its Woman Of The Year for 2017.
“Not only is Selena soaring on the (music) charts, but she continuously inspires young women everywhere to be authentic, give back and to not be afraid to use their voice,” said The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group president John Amato in a statement.
“She is never afraid to speak her mind and has used her platform to advocate for the needs of others. We are thrilled to be able to honour her as our Woman of the Year.”
Gomez, 25, has had many successes on Billboard, enjoying top 10 Billboard Hot 100 smashes with her singles Same Old Love, Hands to Myself and We Don’t Talk Anymore.
This year alone, she’s had three hits in the top 10 of the chart, namely Bad Liar, Fetish (featuring Gucci Mane) and It Ain’t Me (with Kygo).
The former Disney star also has had five albums place in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, including Revival (2015) and Stars Dance (2013).
Gomez’s career isn’t only limited to music. She was the executive producer for Netflix’s series 13 Reasons Why and collaborated with top brands Coach and Puma.
An active ambassador for UNICEF since 2009, she also worked on several philanthropic endeavours, from the Step Up Foundation to coaching for World Kindness Day, and raising more than $500,000 for the Lupus Research Alliance.
